How to Choose a Billboard Advertising Company in Ottawa

What to compare before you sign — location, audience data, pricing, display terms and the questions most advertisers forget to ask.

You aren't buying a company. You're buying one specific location, in front of one specific audience.

Choosing a billboard company shouldn't start with a sales pitch. It should start with the location, the audience, the price and the terms — because that's what you're actually buying.

The size of an operator's network says very little about whether the one board you can afford is the right one. Compare what appears on the road, not what appears on the website.

Seven Things to Compare

What to compare when choosing a billboard company
What to compareWhy it matters
Exact locationDetermines who actually passes the billboard
Estimated impressionsLets you evaluate potential reach
Four-week priceMakes media costs comparable between offers
Estimated CPMShows cost efficiency, not just cost
Display/rotation termsExplains how and when your ad appears
Creative supportReduces friction and protects the campaign
Contract termsPrevents unexpected commitments

Start With the Location

A billboard company is ultimately selling access to an audience in a physical place. Before anything else, ask: where exactly is the board, which direction does it face, is visibility obstructed, who travels through the area, what businesses surround it, and is that audience relevant to you?

An Ottawa business doesn't need the board with the biggest raw audience. It needs the board seen by the right audience.

Impressions, Price and CPM

Ask what audience or impression information is available for each location. Specific numbers let you move past vague phrases like "high traffic," "premium exposure" and "excellent visibility." Crown's Mer-Bleue location, for example, is listed at approximately 630,000 estimated impressions per four weeks.

Then compare total campaign cost against estimated audience reach rather than price alone:

Campaign cost ÷ estimated impressions × 1,000 = estimated CPM

Crown's Mer-Bleue example: $2,100 ÷ 630,000 × 1,000 ≈ $3.33 CPM.

CPM should always be read alongside audience relevance and location quality — a cheap CPM in front of the wrong people isn't value. Our Ottawa billboard cost guide breaks the pricing variables down further.

Display Terms, Creative Support and Contracts

How your ad will appear

For digital inventory, ask how long each message displays, how the rotation works, whether the display operates continuously, what scheduling options exist and whether artwork can be changed mid-campaign. If you want the mechanics first, see how digital billboards work.

Creative support

Billboard design isn't the same as designing a social ad or a flyer — it has to work from a distance and at road speed. Ask whether the provider reviews existing artwork, supplies templates, helps simplify messaging, offers design services and supports mid-campaign changes.

The contract

Before booking, confirm campaign length, payment schedule, cancellation terms, creative deadlines, artwork requirements, extension options and what happens if the billboard can't display your campaign as planned.

Service after the sale

Outdoor campaigns involve location selection, creative preparation, approvals, scheduling, changes, billing and ongoing questions. Know who handles those once the contract is signed.

Questions to Ask Every Billboard Company

  1. What is the exact billboard address?
  2. Which direction does it face?
  3. What are the estimated impressions?
  4. What does four weeks cost?
  5. What is the estimated CPM?
  6. How long does my digital message display?
  7. Is creative design included?
  8. Can I update artwork mid-campaign?
  9. What is the minimum commitment?
  10. Are there additional production fees?
  11. What happens if there's a display issue?
  12. Who manages my campaign day to day?

Local Operator vs Large Network

Neither is automatically better. Large networks can offer more cities, more inventory and broader geographic scale. Smaller local operators tend to offer more direct communication, closer knowledge of the inventory, simpler decision-making and faster creative coordination. Choose based on what your campaign actually needs.

Red Flags

  • the exact location is unclear
  • pricing isn't explained
  • audience claims are vague
  • contract terms aren't available in writing
  • nobody can explain the creative requirements
  • you're pushed into a longer commitment without a reason
  • campaign expectations sound unrealistic

Billboards build visibility. No responsible provider should guarantee a specific number of sales — and whether a billboard is worth it is a question you should be able to answer yourself from the numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look for in a billboard company?

Location quality, audience information, transparent pricing, creative support, contract clarity and responsive service after the sale.

Should I choose the billboard with the most traffic?

Not always. Audience relevance is usually more valuable than raw traffic volume.

How do I compare billboard prices?

Compare total campaign cost, estimated impressions, location quality and approximate CPM together — never price on its own.

Should a billboard company provide impression estimates?

Ask what audience measurement or impression data is available for each location so you can evaluate reach rather than take a claim on faith.

Can a billboard company help design my ad?

Some can. Crown provides creative support as part of its campaign services.

Rates, availability and estimated impressions can change. Contact Crown for current campaign information.
