How to Design a Billboard Ad: 10 Rules for Better Creative

Most wasted billboard spend is a creative problem, not a media problem. Here's what survives at road speed.

Strong billboard creative leads with one clear idea and a product you can recognize instantly.

A billboard is not a giant flyer. People have a few seconds to understand the message, identify the brand and decide whether to remember it — which makes design here an exercise in removal, not addition.

The rules below are the ones we come back to most often when reviewing advertiser artwork before a campaign goes live.

Start With One Message

1. Communicate one idea

A billboard answers one question: what do we want people to remember? Trying to advertise every service weakens the one thing that might actually land.

2. Keep the headline short

Roughly 7–10 primary words is a useful working limit. It isn't a rule handed down from anywhere — it's a discipline that forces the message to stay understandable at a glance.

Make It Legible at Road Speed

3. Make the main text large

Design for someone passing at speed, not for the designer sitting eighteen inches from a monitor. If the key line isn't dominant, it isn't the key line.

4. Create contrast

Text and background must separate cleanly. Combinations that look sophisticated on screen frequently disappear at distance, in glare or after dark.

5. Use images with purpose

A visual should strengthen the message, not fill empty space. If it doesn't add meaning, it's competing with the words.

6. Test the ad small

Shrink the creative on your screen until it's roughly thumbnail size. If the main idea disappears, the design is too complicated for the road.

The real test isn't how the artwork looks in a proof — it's how it reads from a moving vehicle.

Brand and Call to Action

7. Make the brand obvious

Nobody should finish reading your billboard and wonder who advertised.

8. Use one call to action

Choose a single action — visit, call, search, book, exit, shop or apply — and don't ask for several at once.

9. Avoid long URLs and numbers

Use a memorable domain or brand name. Long URLs, long phone numbers, coupon codes and multi-step instructions rarely survive the drive.

10. Design for recall

The goal isn't to make someone study the board. It's to make them remember one thing later, when it matters.

A Simple Billboard Formula

A layout that consistently works: short headline, one supporting visual, brand, one action.

Too much

Better

Same business, same offer — one version is readable in two seconds and one isn't.

  • One headline that states the problem or the offer
  • A brand mark large enough to read at distance
  • One action, in the fewest possible characters

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words should a billboard have?

There's no universal rule, but around 7–10 primary words keeps the message readable at road speed.

Should a billboard include a phone number?

Only when the number is genuinely memorable or the campaign requires it. A simple business name or URL is usually easier to retain.

Should I use a QR code on a roadside billboard?

For moving traffic, a QR code asks too much of the viewer and can create an unsafe interaction. Prioritise a memorable brand or a simple action.

Can Crown help with billboard creative?

Yes. Crown provides creative support to help advertisers develop messaging suited to billboard viewing.
